5 things we loved from Australian Fashion Week

From trending street style and barely-there runway makeup to the appearance of Kiwi brands on Australian runways, we recap five of our favourite moments from AFW 2025.

1. Superfine suiting

The streets of Sydney were awash with impeccably tailored suits this week, as the style set leaned into menswear-inspired looks  for their Fashion Week ensembles of choice. Are our Antipodean neighbours perhaps taking a cue from the Met Gala’s “Superfine Tailoring” theme? These ensembles gave the men a run for their money, with everything from sleek belted coats and tuxedo dresses styled with knee-high boots, to button-up shirts paired with perfectly coordinated ties. We’ve never been more excited about dressing for the office.

2. Fresh faces

Runway beauty has taken a fresh faced approach at this year’s Australian Fashion Week. On Tuesday night’s Beare Park show models skipped foundation  in favour of Emma Lewisham’s soon to be released formulation—Sunceutical SPF 50 Mineral Glow Serum—an intelligent, bronze-tinted serum that provides an immediate illuminating base which comes out later this month. Lead makeup director Isabella Schimid says she focused on skin and achieving that natural, healthy glow. “I did a brown smudge contour around the eyes and a plum stained lip, and only lightly concealed areas of the face that needed it. There was no other base besides Emma Lewisham skincare,” she says.

Of the partnership, Lewisham, who sat front row at the show in a charcoal Beare Park suit said it was a natural alignment. “Both our brands share an unwavering dedication to excellence, craftsmanship, and quality,” says Lewisham. “The partnership is not only a reflection of aligned values, but also of the genuine relationship Gabriella [Beare Park’s Creative Director] and I have built through mutual admiration and a shared vision for purposeful beauty and fashion.”

3. Barely there

While the autumn weather may have prompted Fashion Week attendees to embrace a more layered approach to dressing, the runways told a different story. In contrast to the Cannes Film Festival’s recent ban on ‘naked dressing’, the barely-there trend was alive and well at shows including Beare Park, Bianca Spender and Wynn Hamlyn. From sheer black slip dresses and suggestive cut-outs to low-slung maxi skirts in sheer iridescent green chiffon, it’s safe to say that less-is-more dressing isn’t going anywhere.

4. Honey glow

New Zealand skincare label RAAIE brought its signature glow to the Australian Fashion Week runway, partnering with fashion house Albus Lumen  to infuse the brand’s 10th anniversary  show with fresh, luminous energy. Known for its understated elegance, Albus Lumen provided the perfect canvas for RAAIE’s golden-hour skin aesthetic. “Their aesthetic mirrors our approach to skincare — natural, radiant, and refined,” says RAAIE founder Katey Mandy. For the show, RAAIE collaborated with leading makeup artist Filomena Natoli to design a bespoke skincare ritual that delivered the brand’s hallmark ‘honey skin’ finish. Think skin bathed in golden light — plump, dewy, and deeply nourished. “Our goal was to ensure every model stepped onto the runway glowing from within,” Mandy shares.

A warm evolution of the cult ‘glass skin’ trend, ‘honey skin’ favours rich hydration and a more natural, sunlit radiance over perfection and polish. “If glass skin is all about flawless translucence, honey skin is its warmer, more human counterpart,” Mandy explains. “It’s the new benchmark in glow.” This runway moment comes at the end of an exciting week for RAAIE, as the brand made history as the first New Zealand skincare label to launch into Sephora ANZ.

5. Carry on

New Zealand accessories brand Saben made its Australian Fashion Week debut in striking style on Tuesday night, teaming up with cult athleisure  label Nagnata for their “Return to Earth” show. The runway showcased key pieces from Saben’s upcoming SS25 collection, perfectly complementing Nagnata’s effortless  studio-to-street aesthetic. The collaboration not only marks a significant milestone for Saben’s growing presence in Australia but also highlights a shared commitment to conscious design and elevated functionality.

The limited edition runway styles — including the Haze, Hazel, Jojo, June, and a highly anticipated restock of the sold-out Knox in Black — will be available to purchase from 12 June, ahead of the brand’s full SS25 collection drop in mid-July. Designed for modern women on the move, each silhouette reflects Saben’s philosophy of creating timeless, beautifully constructed pieces that move with you through daily life.
